We’re so proud to share that we’ve swept the Digital Printing category of the Canadian Printing Awards 2019 (for the second year in a row)!
The Canadian Printing Awards is a celebration of excellence and innovation in Canadian printing. This year 113 Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards were presented in five program sections: Industry Achievement, Print Design, Printing, Technology and Environmental categories.
Here’s a little bit of background on the winning labels:
GOLD – Dog Island Brewing, Rise from the Ashes Amber Ale
The custom die of this label is only a part of what makes it so unique – when wrapped around the can, the sides meet up with each other and forms the shape of Dog Island in Northern Alberta. The free-hand white mask gradients were used to bring out the axe and fireman’s hat to add a special, realistic effect. “Getting it Right the First Time” for this label repeat to achieve the final product came from a few heads sitting around a table to understand the customer’s core focus: Honouring our hard-working firefighters and giving a name to Dog Island Brewing Co. with a label that stands out of the crowd. Finishing with a matte lamination made this label look high-end and unique.
SILVER – Town Square Brewing, Prairie Fire Rauchbier
The key to the success on this label was in highlighting all the spots where we used our white ink. Allowing the fire to peek through helped elevate the overall look of the label. Adding a matte finish was integral in setting the stage for bringing the fire to life in this design. Our placement of white ink helped to matte all the surrounding areas. Because of this technique, the label appears to be using foil when really it’s simply printed on a silver stock.
BRONZE – Tea Leaves, Organic Jasmine Pearl White Tea
The incredibly beautiful artwork supplied by this customer was an instant *must* to make it shine on the label. We discussed with the customer on which areas should use foil and which areas should stay as HP ink. We came up with a plan and set it in motion. “Same Place Every Time” was our motto on this label. Using creative strategizing in prepress, we concocted a brass foil plate with our supplier, which keyed into certain spots on the label, so we could develop a sure-fire way of holding registration when we were placing the hot foil down on the substrate. We found just the right release for the adhesive on the foil to do such an intricate design and ended with success.
We’re looking forward to the Canadian Printing Awards next year and hope to keep this streak alive!
